Florida State University boasts a tradition of saying, “We’re No. 1!” and now the College of Business proclaims it with a No. 1 ranking among all schools for its Dr. William T. Hold/The National Alliance Program in Risk Management and Insurance. In U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges 2022 Guidebook,” the college also scored a No. 5 ranking among all public schools for its Real Estate program. And four more academic programs ranked in the Top 20 or Top 25.

‘War room’ chant? Gift could inspire one
 
Benjamin Shibe Macfarland III (BS Real Estate ’03) has emerged with a second significant gift to the College of Business. It’s a $200,000 donation that will establish the Real Estate Research Lab – or so-called War Room – in Legacy Hall, the college’s future home. “Before I make investments,” says Macfarland, CEO and co-founder of SROA Capital, “I’ll take the investment team inside a ‘war room’ sort of thing, and we’ll go through everything.”

Meet the new Board of Governors chair
 
As the new chair of the College of Business Board of Governors, Brett Lindquist (BS Finance & Real Estate ’83) says he aims to hit new fundraising levels and to see construction begin on Legacy Hall. He also emphasizes the role of board members to promote the college’s rising stature. Read about Lindquist’s priorities, which include touting one of the best business schools in the country. “That’s a wow!” he says.

Advisory boards welcome numerous newcomers
See our list of alumni and business leaders who recently joined the college’s various department and center advisory boards. The boards feature accomplished industry professionals and executives, and they’re essential to the college’s curriculum, ranking and standing. The boards enable the exchange of ideas and give students networking opportunities with influential business leaders. Board members also see membership as one way to give back to the college and to stay connected.

Sales of new classrooms prompt another ‘Wow!’
The College of Business has received gifts to name nearly all its Legacy Hall classrooms, which Chief Development Officer David VanLone and other college officials trumpet as “exciting” and “Wow!” worthy. Donations for classrooms – plus multiple other academic, faculty and showcase spaces in Legacy Hall – demonstrate steady support from FSU alumni and other donors as the college  looks forward to breaking ground on its new home in fall 2022.

Register today: The college’s Graduate Programs Office is hosting two informational webinars this month for working professionals or students considering a graduate degree.

Master Your Future, 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 5 – Learn more about the college’s six master’s degrees: Accounting (MAcc) on campus; Business Administration (MBA) online and on campus; Business Analytics (MS-BA) on campus; Finance (MSF) on campus; Management Information Systems (MS-MIS) online; and Risk Management and Insurance (MS-RMI) online. The event offers a short introduction to each master’s degree program, and participants can visit with program faculty directors and admissions staff members. Register at bit.ly/fsubizmasters.

Ph.D. Open House, 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 6 – Learn about the benefits of pursuing a Ph.D. in business. The college offers Ph.D. majors in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management Information Systems, Organizational Behavior and Human Resources, Risk Management and Insurance or Strategy. Build your skills and network: A vice president at Socius Insurance Services’ Property and Casualty practice in Tampa, Stephanie Mitchell said she found Florida State’s online Master of Science in Risk Management and Insurance (MS-RMI) “well-suited” for a full-time working professional like herself and expanded her industry connections. “The online platform allowed for group collaboration with other members of the insurance community and provided networking opportunities with other students across the country,” said Mitchell, a 2016 MS-RMI graduate. “Completion of this program has enhanced my analytical skill set and provided me with the necessary tools to take my career to the next level.”

Housed in the top-ranked Dr. William T. Hold/The National Alliance Program in Risk Management and Insurance, the MS-RMI degree program is accepting applications until March 1 for its next cohort, which begins in May.
