$450,000 gift to recognize stellar teaching

Chuck Hardwick (BS Finance '62; MBA '64) fondly remembers faculty members who made a difference for him more than a half a century ago. "Of course, they're gone – I can't thank them," he says. "But I can do something in my own modest way to further strengthen the institution." Hardwick, a retired Pfizer senior-leadership executive and former New Jersey Assemblyman, is providing a $450,000 gift to establish the college's Charles Hardwick Teaching Awards. Hardwick’s gift renames the teaching recognition program established by Dean Michael Hartline and financially endows and supports the initiative.

Peter Collins on the geology of private equity

Having built a rock-solid private equity firm, college Alumni Hall of Fame member Peter Collins (BS Finance '92; MBA '97) knows a little something about earth science – which he likens to raising money for a private equity fund. "Fundraising is like geology," he said. "It's all about time and pressure. It's cold calling. It's going and seeing people. It's about determination..." Collins, co-founder and managing principal of Tampa-based Forge Capital Partners and chairman of the Florida State University Board of Trustees, spoke in late January as the featured guest in the Closing Bell Speaker Series.

BAISSC math: Dedication = rankings success

"It's a signal to us that we're on the right track," said Ashley Bush, chair of the Department of Business Analytics, Information Systems and Supply Chain, or BAISSC. "It's a signal to students that there's value in the degree, and it's a signal to potential employers that we have a high-quality program." The department's undergraduate Management Information Systems program ranks No. 16 among public schools, and its online master’s degree in Management Information Systems ranks No. 11. The department also boasts a No. 9 ranking for its MBA specialization in Business Analytics.

Valentine's bonus: A story of lectures and love

When they met in a Southern California bar 33 years ago, little did Ken and Deb Armstrong know that decades later they'd teach together in Florida State University's College of Business. That's what they've been doing for five years, with Ken now an associate lecturer specializing in database architecture and Deb a professor of management information systems. "Everything has led us to this point – now that we look back on it – for a reason," Ken says. "We're here, and we're happy, and we're doing exactly what we love to do."

Learn from the experts: Without a doubt, Alejandro Cifuentes said, the return on his investment in a Master of Science in Finance (MSF) at Florida State University’s College of Business turned out to be two-fold: “the depth of knowledge I was exposed to and the quality of the professors.” The 2015 MSF graduate said that winning combination helped him gain the advanced skills to serve first as a senior financial analyst at Spirit Airlines in Miramar, Florida, and then in subsequent finance positions leading to his current portfolio manager post at MMG Bank in Panama City, Panama. “The professors’ expertise and knowledge were key in the learning process. The program showed me the actual complexities of finance, which pushed me to pursue a career in asset management and investments.” Cifuentes also earned his bachelor’s degree at FSU in 2014, majoring in finance and management information systems.

Applications are due by March 1 annually for the MSF program. The next cohort begins in June and graduates in spring 2023. FSU finance alumni and students with the highest GPAs are eligible for GMAT waivers, and those applying early will be considered for competitive assistantships that provide financial assistance.
