Alumnus' book recalls perilous assignment

Working as a U.S. expatriate in Tehran during the Iranian Revolution, Florida State business alumnus Barry Anderson (BS Management ’73) bore witness to one of the most harrowing ordeals in U.S. history. As director of Lockheed Martin’s industrial relations in Iran in the 1970s, he also led the company’s evacuation efforts. Now a retired international human resources executive and a steadfast FSU supporter, Anderson has written a book about his experiences. He and his wife, Janice, also recently made two major gift commitments to support students and faculty members of the college.

Family legacy inspires gifts to new building

When Andy Norman thinks about Florida State University, he reflects on his student days as well as his service to his alma mater as a board member for the College of Business and Seminole Boosters. Norman, president and managing partner of Lakeland-based GMF Steel Group, recently made a $250,000 gift commitment to create the Norman Family Foundation Classroom.

Several members of the college’s Board of Governors recently signed additional gift commitments: Roy Apple (BS Finance ’86), Colleen Dean (BS Accounting ’02), Denise Dexter (BS Finance ’93), Diahann Lassus (BS Management ’76), Chair Brett Lindquist (BS Finance and Real Estate ’83) and Randall Vitale (BA Management and Multinational Business ’99).

Faculty, staff honors culminate with new inductees into faculty hall of fame

Dr. Barry Diskin built a reputation as a demanding professor who inspired thanks from his students. Dr. Bill Hillison demonstrated a marathon work ethic that included a “weird” all-day office schedule. And the late Dr. Bob Marshall exuded a magnetism that made him a “wise counselor” to everyone. Benefits beyond the classroom: The knowledge and networking acquired in the Master of Accounting (MAcc) program continue to pay off, said Connor Dawkins, a senior associate in Controller Operations for PwC in Tampa. “I built a good network of fellow CPAs throughout the country and industry,” the 2017 MAcc graduate said of his time at FSU. “Networking with your fellow classmates is important and pays dividends years after graduating.” Case in point, Dawkins said before hiring him for his most recent post, his senior manager vetted him with other FSU MAcc graduates she knew. “She mentioned how valuable their positive testimony of me was in getting the position,” he said.

The MAcc program admits new students each semester. Application deadlines are June 1 for fall entry, Oct. 1 for spring entry and March 1 for summer entry. FSU accounting alumni and students with the highest GPAs are now eligible for GMAT waivers.
