Celebrating students, faculty, national recognition

Student success. Faculty achievement. Top 10 rankings. The college continues to celebrate all of them and more. About 96% of business freshmen return for their sophomore year while nearly 80% of business students graduate within four years – numbers that align with record-breaking data of the university. The college also touts data that show its faculty ranked No. 1 in percentage of published faculty among business schools at Carnegie-classified public universities. Meanwhile, two programs remain in the Top 10 of the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings -- the Dr. William T. Hold/The National Alliance Program in Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) at No. 4 among all schools and the real estate program at No. 6 among public schools.
Alumni Hall of Fame welcomes new inductees

The college this month inducted four “wonderful role models” into its Alumni Hall of Fame – increasing its number of members to 66. Inducted were Christopher Iansiti, a visionary entrepreneur and organizational-transformation expert; Russell Kohl, an innovative executive in the global cutting and power tools industry; Kyle Riva, a leader in development, construction and financing of high-profile commercial real estate; and Nada Usina, a global expert in executive search and advisory services. “We honor, salute and congratulate you as wonderful role models and outstanding ambassadors for the university and the College of Business,” Michael Hartline, dean of the college, told the new inductees during the ceremony. Nominations for the 2024 College of Business Alumni Hall of Fame are being accepted through Friday, Dec. 22, 2023. The nomination form can be found at business.fsu.edu/ahof.
FSU Alumni Association honors college grads

Four esteemed College of Business alumni received prestigious awards during the FSU Alumni Association’s annual awards ceremony held in October. College of Business Alumni Hall of Fame member Peter Collins (B.S. Finance '92; MBA '97), chair of the FSU Board of Trustees, received the Bernard F. Sliger Award, the alumni association’s highest honor. He also received a Circle of Gold Award, which recognizes people who amplify the university’s tradition of excellence. The three other award winners from the college were Fred Tresca (BS Accounting and Finance '82), a College of Business Alumni Hall of Fame member, and Jeanne Curtin (MBA ’99), both of whom received a Circle of Gold Award; and Max Spanier (B.S. Finance ’11), who received a Reubin O’D. Askew award, the alumni association’s highest honor for young alumni.
Summit to address state’s critical healthcare concerns

The college is bringing together healthcare leaders from throughout Florida and the U.S. for a comprehensive one-day forum to address the industry’s most pressing workforce, policy, financial and technology issues. The Business of Healthcare Summit, scheduled for Jan. 26 at the Turnbull Florida State Conference Center, will examine healthcare operations in the state and nation from the perspective of hospitals, private practices, health systems, policy boards and other professional organizations. College alumni Kevin Little (BS Accounting '92), CEO of Health Advocates Network, and Alex Fernandez (BS Finance ’02), CFO of VITAS Healthcare, will serve as panelists.
Rebranded center to tackle new-century challenges

Behold the FSU Organizational Effectiveness Institute, formerly the Center for Human Resource Management. Samantha Paustian-Underdahl, the new Barry and Janice Anderson director, has led a rebranding of the center, which aims to train students and to help organizations achieve and maintain optimal effectiveness in the face of 21st century challenges. Dean Michael Hartline expressed appreciation for the work of the previous director, Darren Brooks, the college’s assistant dean for executive and professional programs and director of MBA programs. “Dr. Paustian-Underdahl is building on a strong foundation,” Hartline said, “and we’re confident that her energy, enthusiasm, research and knowledge will take the Organizational Effectiveness Institute to a new level of success.”
Support Students' First-Year Experience

Show your Seminole spirit and unleash your College of Business benevolence Nov. 28 during the college’s 2023 Giving Tuesday campaign. The campaign supports students’ First-Year Experience – an initiative to engage business-intent students in their first year on campus. Examples include a new Engage 100 class and, beginning in fall 2024, a Business Living-Learning Community in which business-intent freshmen will live together in an FSU residence hall and engage with the college and explore their career interests. The initiative also features Mark Zeigler, a long-beloved FSU faculty member who recently became the college’s director of First-Year Experience Programs. Support our Giving Tuesday campaign here.
GMAT now optional for all business master’s programs

The college still accepts but no longer requires GMAT scores for admission into all its master’s programs. Mirroring a trend at academic institutions throughout the country, the college announced in September a move to a GMAT-optional policy that began with applications submitted for spring entry. That deadline passed Oct. 1. The college still requires test scores for doctoral business programs. Students still can submit GMAT or GRE scores to enhance their application, but officials note that any submitted test scores will become part of an application and used in the college’s admission decision.
